Eating Acai Berries When Pregnant

Like other dark berries, such as blueberries or cranberries, the acai berry has loads of potential as part of a healthy diet. Antioxidants, such as flavinoids, are helpful in eliminating free radicals from the system (which slows the effects of aging and negates cancer cells). Acai berries, which come from palm trees in South and Central America, have been eaten by women in those parts of the world for centuries, both during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Acai as a Freeze-Dried Supplement

Acai is also believed to have effective weight-control properties that logic dictates would lead to more consistent ovulation, which in turn could mean a greater level of fertility in women. Freeze-dried acai, as a nutritional supplement, can provide the body with the most nutrients. The vitamins and minerals present in acai can bolster the reproductive glands and foster healthy egg development.

Helpful in More Ways than One

Free radicals, which are eliminated by the kinds of antioxidants found in acai berries, can have a harmful effect on ovarian cells, as well as the follicle and egg. And antioxidants are found in so-called “super foods” like acai, which has as much or more antioxidants as strawberries, blueberries and other fruits that are recommended by most doctors as part of a healthy diet.

Supplements made from acai berries can also boost energy levels and sex drive – as do most dark berries – as well as maintaining stability in the menstrual cycle. Acai also has a good deal of protein, which can’t be said of most other berries, making it a welcome dietary addition considering that pregnancy increases women’s demand for protein by some 30 percent. Expecting moms should check with their doctors about the potential benefits of acai (if one is allergic, for instance, it wouldn’t be very helpful) and to make sure that any acai supplements they take are not loaded with other substances – such as caffeine – that could have a self-defeating impact on the pregnancy.
